PCMC Has Stopped Monthly Assistance Of Rs 1 Cr To Transport Body

The decision of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to stop monthly financial assistance of Rs one crore to the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) from April has put a question mark on the transport company's future as the issue comes up for debate at the meeting of PMPML board of directors later this month.

On the directive of the state government, the two civic bodies (Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad) have been contributing Rs 1 crore each every month to the PMPML for the last three years. In fact, the PMPML was formed with the merger of erstwhile Pune Municipal Transport and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Transport. While the government resolution (GR) to this effect was issued in April 2007, the actual formation and functioning of the company began in January 2008 only.

The PCMC argues that it has been paying the mandatory Rs 1 crore since April 2007 and so it can stop the aid now as the three-year term comes to an end. Civic activists, however, say that since the company's actual formation had happened only in January 2008, the PCMC should continue to pay till January 2011.

PMPML's website hacked
The website of the PMPML has been attacked by virus due of which it is showing old and incorrect information for the past one week. PMPML officials said that work on restoring the website is in progress. The website continues to show Nitin Khade as the chairman and managing director of PMPML although, he was transferred in August last year. Since last month, Pune divisional commissioner Dilip Band has been given additional charge as the chairman and managing director of the PMPML.

The PMPML officials have refused to comment on why and how the PCMC has arrived at a decision to stop the aid. The PMC, on the other hand, has not taken any decision on the matter yet.

Neelkanth Londhe, chief accountant of PCMC, said that as the GR was issued in April 2007, the three-year period (for providing the financial aid) gets over by this financial year. Londhe added that the PCMC has received a letter from the PMPML requesting continuation of the aid. However, the PCMC is yet to take a decision on the letter, he added.

The PMPML officials say that funds provided by the two civic bodies are spent on salaries of workers and it would be difficult to manage the transport body if either of the two stop funding.
