Soon, Soldiers To Travel On e-TicketsBy akansha, Section News
Standing in line to get railway tickets will no longer be a chore that armymen have to endure. The Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) has started its eticketing pilot project, by which soldiers serving in different parts of the country will be able to get tickets at their respective units. In a year's time, the project will be duplicated throughout the country.
"The project intends to reduce the problems faced by soldiers when they travel. We started the pilot project last month and are in the process of extending it to other parts of the country," said Nita Kapoor, Controller General Defence Accounts (CGDA). "By using this method, a lot of paperwork will be reduced," she added. Kapoor was speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a building complex at the Joint Controller of Defence Accounts, Pashan. She said that the e-ticking system would be expanded as soon as automation work was in place. Currently, 20 units have been selected for the pilot project. The headquarters of the CGDA has evolved a conceptual framework for development of a centralised defence travel system based on e-ticketing for the issuance of rail tickets. In the existing system, individual defence service travellers are required to visit railway stations and get tickets issued against exchange of railway warrants at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. The new system will have virtual PRS and enable issuance of tickets through a centralised portal operated by the CGDA office. Avinash Dikshit, joint controller general at CGDA, Delhi, told TOI that all the defence forces units in the country would be connected in a year's time. "Units from Leh to down south will be covered. Travelling to any corner of the country will be possible with the help of this system," he said.
"We are planning to continue with the pilot project till March 31," said Dikshit, who is heading the project. "If there are any problems in the system, we will be able to straighten them out. Then we will extend it to other parts of the country. For the airforce it will be faster, since it has less units. Of the 20 units which will run the pilot project, 14 units are from the army while three each are from the navy and the airforce," he added. Dikshit stated that the defence department issues as many as 16 lakh warrants to armymen for travelling. The gigantic task of submission of warrants, it's verification and other technicalities will be bypassed after implementation of this system. Even the huge task of auditing the warrants will be simplified, as all the data will already be available with the accounts department.
"This system is simple and fast. A person who wishes to travel will have to just place a request, giving details of his journey. After approval of the commanding officer, he will get the tickets at his unit. He will not need to pay anything at the unit, the amount will be directly deducted from his account. This facility is available for official as well as personal travelling," Dikshit said.
