12K To Appear For UoP's Ph.D Entrance Tests

The University of Pune's (UoP) impending maiden entrance tests for PhD enrolments is set to alter the way the aspirants for a lecturer's job at state universities and colleges take their approach to fulfilling their job aspiration. Over 12,000 candidates are expected to appear for the entrance exams.

These aspirants will no more have to carry the mental burden of clearing the National or State Eligibility Test (NET/SET) considering that the PhD degree holders are exempted from these qualifying tests for the lecturer's job. In an attempt to raise standards of the universitylevel research programmes, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had notified on July 11, 2009, the fresh guidelines for all universities to follow while enrolling students for doctoral research programmes.

Among other things, the guidelines made it mandatory for the universities to conduct an entrance test for PhD enrolments and the varsities were given the discretion of devising their own models of PhD entrance tests. The UGC also made a PhD degree mandatory for appointment to the post of lecturers at universities or affiliated colleges.

Taking the PhD route is seen by the job aspirants as a more convenient option compared to the NET/SET, which are widely viewed as difficult tests to clear. For instance, the success rate of the SET being conducted by the UoP across Maharashtra and Goa since 1994, has never gone beyond 5 per cent, barring the odd exceptions.

The preference to PhD over NET/SET is further manifested in the huge response drawn by the twostage PhD entrance exams, which is scheduled for February 14 (general aptitude paper) and February 21 (subject-specific paper).

Over 12,000 candidates representing a cross section of fresh post-graduate passouts to working professionals and executives, have put in their applications for the entrance tests. Together, they will vie for close to 2,000 PhD seats offered in 102 subjects.

According to UoP's director of board of college and university development, Pandit Vidyasagar, "Subjects like management studies have drawn larger number of applications. We are still processing the subject-wise data regarding the pleas."

"Unlike the NET/SET, the PhD is seen by students as a more flexible option as it gives time for them to acquire specialisation in a subject of their choice. Plus, the option of appearing for the NET/SET while simultaneously pursuing PhD studies always exists," Vidyasagar said. The university authorities however fear that the NET/SET exemption for PhD-holders is bound to create a problem of plenty over the next few years.

Also, the university is still to work on certain issues like securing consent from all the registered PhD guides under its belt to take fresh students under their guidance. "We are working on these issues," said Vidyasagar.
