By akansha, Section Education
Unlike last year, the campus placements in different engineering colleges of the city this year have been an encouraging one as several Information Technology (IT) and non-IT companies have started recruiting students. The placement drive in the city engineering colleges, which began in December, saw nearly 80% of the placements done within two months.
Last year, the campus placements were hit due to the global meltdown and even some of the students who were selected were given joining letters very late as things were hard for the companies. According to him, last year the college had registered a dip of about five to 10% in the companies visiting the college for the placements. "But this year things have changed. In fact, the students have the option of choosing companies that wish to join," he added. Dean of Sinhgad Institute Jayprakash Pitambare said, "So far we have 75% of the placements in IT companies. In the placements for the core engineering branches, 20% of the students got good placements within the first few days. The bio-tech engineering course was started first in our college and this year we had companies scouting the campus for placements," he said. Last year, the number of companies coming down for recruitments in the colleges dipped, especially the IT sector.
Interestingly, Vishwakarma Institute of Technology has had no impact of recession. Placement officer VD Pawar said, "More than 60% of our students have got the offers from all IT and non-IT companies. In fact, last year we had 110% of the placements and luckily the college had no impact of the recession. Officials of all engineering colleges said that the core companies pay better salary packages than the IT companies and despite the recession, the recruitment drive for the core engineering branches was not affected much."
However, Pune Vidyarthi Gruha authorities said that they are yet recover from the effect of global meltdown. College placement officer Arun Kanetkar said, "Compared to the previous two years, this year we had less number of companies approaching us. We have done with only 40% of our placements both in IT and non-IT sectors."
