Now, IITM To Offer Job-Specific Training
By akansha, Section Education
A special institute that will impart job-specific training to budding scientists in climate research from June will be set up on the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) campus at Pashan here.
The institute, which will be called Advanced Training School in Climate and Earth System, will be one of its kind in the country because it will impart training according to vacancies available in the climate research sector in the country, IITM director B N Goswami has told TOI. "The intention is to address the lack of scientists in specific fields of atmospheric sciences. It is a new concept that aims to address the problem of the dearth of trained manpower," he said. Asked about the areas in which climate research in the country is facing lack of manpower, Goswami said, "Modelling in climate research is one such area. Getting trained manpower is a big worry in this field. This is having a cascading effect on all researches in monsoon and climate change." Elaborating on the nonavailability of scientists, he stated that compared to the actual requirement, only 20 per cent manpower was available in this field. Giving details about the institute, he stated that it will start functioning from next year. "The first batch of 10 scientists will start training at the IITM from June 2011 and they will be trained in modeling work. After their training, they will be asked to join government organisations which are facing manpower crunch. The number of intake per batch will be increased from the next year," Goswami said. "Since modeling is one of the areas to have suffered the most, we are staring up this institute to imparting training on modeling. As the time progresses, we will increase the areas and number of scientists. Candidates enrolled in the institute will get degrees from well-known universities, such as the University of Pune," he explained. Experts in the field say that such institute will help in capacity building in future predictions. Development of trained manpower is necessary for climate change research and monsoon projections, they add. "Future predictions are very important for chalking out government policies. Making prediction as accurate as possible will be feasible only when one has the required trained manpower," said D S Pai, director, long-term forecasting, India Meteorological Department. Why climate models are needed
Climate models are used to simulate the interactions between various factors of atmosphere. Using such models weather predictions are done. These models are even used for the study of climate change. Interactions between oceans, land, air and ice are studied. As per the requirements, statistical as well as numerical models are used for climate research.
