City Could See 50% Water CutBy akansha, Section News ![]() While the Irrigation Department is not denying the possibility of such a situation, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) says there is no other option but to implement further water cut immediately if rains play truant even for the next couple of days. Pramod Nirbhavne, chief of the PMC water supply department, said there is a strong likelihood of a further slash in the civic water supply. An official of the Irrigation Department said since the whole of June has passed almost without any rains, the water available in Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams would last only till July 15. "If there is no rainfall in the next couple of days, we have decided to take a stock of things on the last day of this month and decide on the measures that need to be taken." Nirbhavne said, "The water cut might even go up to 50 per cent, in which case we might have to provide water on an alternate day basis. The situation is turning really grave now." "The water levels in Khadakwasla and Panshet dams are going down rapidly. The near negligible rains are not sufficient at all for the dams to get filled," the Irrigation Department official said. The water storage in these two dams is only about three per cent at present, while there is almost no water in Temghar and Varasgaon dams.
Though the monsoon is rapidly advancing elsewhere in the country, including Mumbai and remaining parts of Maharashtra, they have eluded the city so far. And the worst is that the situation is not going to improve in the next two days. "The monsoon winds are not so active and that is why the rains are not occurring," said Medha Khole, director of weather section of IMD, Pune. "A revival is expected as conditions are favourable, but it will be gradual. It will take two more days for the city and adjoining parts to see some satisfactory showers." According to the IMD report, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into the entire Vidarbha. "An off-shore trough at mean sea level is extending from north Konkan coast to the Kerala coast. Under its influence, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely along the west coast during the next two-three days," the report says.
