In the first year, the total number of students who availed of this scheme was 3,536, out of which 3,051 were from standard X and 485 were from standard XII. The PMC spent Rs 4.80 crore over this initiative, Chief of the Urban Community Development Department of PMC, Ashok Kalamkar told the The Indian Express.

The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Educational Assistance scheme provides Rs 15,000 a year to those who consistently score 80 per cent above marks in class X, the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Educational Assistance scheme is given to students of class XII, which provides Rs 25,000 above for those who score 80 per cent and above.

Kalamkar said, "The eligibility criteria are: the student should be residing in Pune (within PMC limits) for the past three years; only one child from a family can claim the assistance; a student will not be considered eligible if he hails from a family that has three children, any of whom is born after May 1, 2001. This financial assistance is meant for tuition fees, private coaching classes, purchase of textbooks and other stationery item."
