Crackdown Begins On Rickshaws Not Plying By MeterBy akansha, Section Local Transportation
<img align="left" src="http://www.qbtpl.net/images/y5.jpg">The traffic police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) have initiated action against the autorickshaw drivers who are not charging fare as per meters in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The traffic police has been insisting that autorickshaw drivers in Pimpri Chinchwad should ply their vehicles by meters. However, the autorickshaw unions have been arguing that it is not economical to charge meter fare as the areas in the twin township are scattered and that they have to charge extra fare because there is "empty running" of the vehicle once the passenger is dropped at his or her destination. The traffic authorities have however refuted the argument. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil on Monday said that the action against autorickshaw drivers will be intensified from Tuesday. He said rickshaw drivers have been given considerable time to start plying by meter system. According to Patil, autorickshaw drivers in Pimpri-Chinchwad have been given permission to operate on share-a-rickshaw basis anywhere in the twin township.
