PMC's Effort To Set Up Processing Units Meets ResistanceBy Riti, Section News
The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) efforts to set up 14 ward-level garbage disposal plants is being resisted by locals.
The civic body plans to set up 12 biomethanation units, which will process about 60-70 tonne garbage daily. Another two mechanised composting units will come up soon which will process 2-3 tonnes of waste. Another 100 tonne capacity biomethanation plant is coming up near Mundhwa, where primary survey is completed. The PMC has located the 14 spots, but these efforts are met with resistance by the residents. Though the PMC officials have decided not to come out openly on this issue, a top official admitted that they have received opposition from some sections. For instance, representative of a particular community submitted a letter to the municipal corporation opposing the processing unit near a crematorium, saying it will "hurt" their sentiments. However, the PMC has taken a tough stance on the issue and has decided to go ahead with its plan. It has decided not to announce location for setting up plants, fearing locals' backlash. "We are taking all stakeholders into confidence and the matter will be discussed at all levels," said a PMC official.
