Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in collaboration with steel maker Arcelor Mittal along with the Ministry of Environment and Forest and United Nations has organised a nationwide campaign titled- Kaun Banega Paryavaran Ka Ambassador (KBPKA) with a motive to generate environmental awareness in the country.

Talking about the campaign, Laxmikant Deshpande, programme officer, CEE said, "This is derived originally from the international campaign that UN is running titled Kick Bad Habits, the Indian version of which is Pick Right." As a part of the campaign, the members of over 40 centres of CEE from across the nation will be visiting schools and colleges in various cities along with a kit that consists of Environment booklet, posters and CDs.

"The volunteers will explain the various aspects related to environment conservation such as conservation of water, biodiversity, health, waste management and energy conservation along with a demonstration.

The students will then have to vote for a celebrity that they think can make the best ambassador for environment.

(The event will take place at Indradhanushya Citizenship and Environment Education Centre, Opposite Sachin Tendulkar Joggers Park, Dattawadi. Entry is free for all. For further information contact(indradhanushya.pune @gmail.com )

It can be actor, sportsperson, politician or for that matter one's neighbour who is doing good work for the conservation of the environment," added Deshpande. The final counting of the votes is scheduled to take place in September post which the ambassador selected will be a part of the promotional activities of the campaign informed he. "Global Warming and Climate Change are no more `imaginations' of the scientists and affect our everyday life now. Urban heat island effect, changing seasonal patterns, rise in malaria, and flash floods due to sudden and heavy rainfall are few examples that we have witnessed recently.

Involvement of celebrities will certainly help send across the message to maximum number of people," added Deshpande.

As a sub-part of the KBPKA campaign, CEE has organised a one-day event- CO2- Pick Right in collaboration with ALERT and Pune Municipal Corporation on June 5, World Environment Day.

With PMC collector Mahesh Zagade and ex-mayor Vandana Chavan as the chief guests, participants in the training will be oriented about the reasons for climate change, and make the right development decisions that reduce CO2 contributions and help adapt to climate change.

"Participants are expected to use the training and the training kit to create awareness among their own community; such as eco-clubs in the school, college or neighbourhood," added Deshpande.
