The 153-acre Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports complex at Balewadi will host the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) from October 12 to 18.

The complex comprises venues for competitive sports events and the Athletes Village. "The sports city has a total of nine competition venues including 5 indoor (badminton, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling and boxing) and four outdoor (athletics, tennis, swimming and shooting) venues, equipped with world class facilities like modern electronic scoring and timing equipment," said Brig G A Siddiqui, in-charge of the infrastructure at the sports complex.

He said each venue also has a separate practice and warmup area. There are certain common areas like games family lounge, players lounge, media lounge, medical room and changing rooms in every venue. "The shooting range at the sports complex is the best in the country," he said. The spirit of CYG 2008 is clearly in the air as one sets foot at Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports complex. Built with a futuristic intention of holding international sports events in Pune, the Athletes Village and can house 1800 athletes. "The badminton hall with a 90m x 40m field of play, 16 badminton courts and a seating capacity of 3000 is one of the biggest and best in the world. The best public address, sound and lighting systems have been secured in this badminton hall. The flooring and acoustics are already completed. This is a multipurpose hall which can also be used for sports like table tennis, volleyball, basketball, judo, handball and gymnastics.

There is a conference hall with a capacity of 400 and the biggest lounge area in the whole sports complex," said Brig Siddiqui.

Speaking about the weightlifting venue, he said, "It can seat 800 people and has many special features like acoustic sound insulation and evaporative air cooling system. It is an existing structure that has been renovated. The wooden flooring by an American company, Conners, is known to be excellent. There is a separate warm-up hall, also acoustically treated and air cooled."

Security and emergency arrangements like fire fighting systems, smoke detectors and hooters have been installed to ensure complete safety.
