WiFi stranded on CYG route, from Lohegaon airport to Balewadi sports stadium via; Ganeshkhind RoadBy Mrs Gupta, Section Commonwealth Youth Games 2008
Even as the development work of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) route -- from Lohegaon airport to Balewadi sports stadium via; Ganeshkhind Road -- is progressing at a steady pace (only 44 days are left for the event), it seems the plan to make the route WiFi (wireless fidelity) looks difficult to be rolled out in time. The Pune Municipal Corporation has clearly fallen behind the deadline.
Even though the PMC claims that the work on the CYG route is being carried out day-and-night, the work is not likely to be complete for the WiFi trials. When contacted, chief information officer Anupam Saraph said, "Had the development work got over, it would have been feasible to roll out the plan of making that route wireless. However, since the work is falling behind the schedule, we have not been able to hold any trials to as yet." As reported in The Indian Express on May 24, the plan was to provide WiFi connectivity on CYG route during the week-long sports event to enable the police department to carry online security and traffic surveillance checks. Saraph had then said: "We should be able to hold mock-tests of security and traffic monitoring on the CYG route by August." However, things seem to be slipping out of hands as the deadline is nearing. "CYG was a good timeline for making the route WiFi enabled. However, for whatever reasons, it does not seem to be working out. Therefore, I think we will have to roll out the plan once the CYG is over," Saraph said. When asked if the security check through WiFi model during the CYG was feasible, Saraph replied, "It looks difficult as the road work is yet to be completed." He said that there are about 5-6 private companies who have shown interest for this particular venture. When contacted, JNNURM cell chief Vinay Deshpande said, "Even though the road work is to continue for the next few days, the WiFi trials could still be conducted without any hitches, as the development work does not pose a problem for that.
