The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to implement garbage segregation system in 40 wards in the four zones of the municipal limits before October.

Nagkumar Kunchagi, medical officer of health (MOH), told TOI on Saturday that the PCMC plans to allot the contract to implement the first phase of five-year garbage segregation project to the Swaccha Sanstha (SS) before October 11.

SS Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad unit, which segregates garbage in 70 wards in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits through its 1800 members, had applied for implementing the project. The PCMC officials had inspected SS's work and were satisfied.

A survey of the PCMC's 40 wards revealed that around 1.17 lakh families reside there. A total of 295 employees will be needed, as per the PCMC norms, to serve these families.

The civic body will also have to incur an expenditure of Rs 1.59 crore per year on these employees as per the minimum wages. But the SS is willing to perform the same work at a lesser cost.

Two of its members will collect garbage from 500 families. And a total of 512 members will be needed to serve the 40 wards. Equipment like ghantagadis, plastic buckets, safety devices such as gloves, masks etc worth Rs 80.80 lakh will be needed by the garbage collectors. Another Rs 69.74 lakh will be provided by the civic body for social security, education, administrative work, travel, phone charges, training and others.

The PCMC will also give Rs 55.35 lakh to SS each year during the second, third and fifth year of the project. When the SS becomes self-sufficient, it will run the project through voluntary charges given by the citizens.

The proposal to give the contract to SS will be taken up by the standing committee on September 2. If its work is found satisfactory, the municipal commissioner will have the power to give the contract to implement the project in the remaining 65 wards in PCMC limits. The proposal will be sent to PCMC general body (GB) for final approval.
