Superspeciality Treatment Like Oral And Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Now Affordable To Common ManBy Sumit Kumar, Section Health
The city is fast emerging as a hub for medical superspeciality treatments with more patient-friendly services that meet international standards.
Superspeciality treatments like oral and maxillofacial prosthodontics -- which deals with replacement of structures in the head, neck and face region after oral cancer surgery-- are fast catching on since they are up to the mark and affordable even to the common man. "A near normal life is indeed possible after oral cancer surgery and the patients don't have to resign themselves to a suboptimal lifestyle post treatment," says B. Srinivasan, an oral and maxillofacial prosthodontist with the Ruby Hall Cancer Treatment, adding that there is a need to effect a paradigm shift in our approach to the entire issue. Foeto-maternal medicine or high risk pregnancy unit is another dedicated and rapidly emerging superspeciality treatment that has put the city on the national map. Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ICOG), an academic outfit of Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecologist Societies of India (FOGSI), has recognised Gupte Hospital and Research Centre in Reproduction as a centre for fellowship in high-risk pregnancy in the city.
"Around 85 per cent pregnancies are normal, but the rest are associated with high risk factors either linked with mortality or morbidity of mother or foetus," said gynaecologist Sanjay Gupte. These are the cases where women are suffering from diabetes, hypertension or 40 other medical conditions. "Such women require dedicated speciality services and a team of doctors as their care is vastly different than that of normal deliveries," said Gupte.
Similarly, the Poona Hospital has a dedicated neuro-otalogy unit that extends superspeciality treatment to those with vertigo (loss of balance). "Ear disorders are just one cause of vertigo. There are many reasons that cause vertigo and knowledge of neurological conditions play a vital role in diagnosis and treatment," said neurologist Sudhir Kothari, who heads the neuro-otology or vertigo unit at the Poona Hospital. "There are high incidence of patients with vertigo in the city and hence a dedicated unit catering to such patients is the need of the hour," said Kothari. A newly-launched superspeciality Spine Centre at Ruby Hall Clinic deals specially with back and neck related pains. "Often, there is no physical cause for neck or back pain. And such a problem that involves psychological complications need to be separately dealt with," said spine surgeon Randhir Kenjale. The concept of the spine centre is to have all the allied specialities like spine surgeons, neuro-physician, clinical psychologists and spine programme physiotherapists under one roof for the effective management of back and neck related disorders. "Long working hours and stressful life are taking a toll on the health of youngsters, especially those working in IT companies and BPOs," said Kenjale. They end up taking painkillers and run from pillar to post for treatment where the real cause of their pain gets never properly diagnosed. Pain management is another medical superspeciality that is finding favour with professionals and employees in the city. "There are certain chronic pains that needs special attention. Such pains bars person from routine activities and make their life nightmarish," said Madhuri Lokapure, who heads the pain management unit at the Ruby Hall Clinic. Sourcxe: TOI, Aug-28-2008
