Over 7,000 seats of class 11 of arts stream in the city are set to remain vacant this year. On the last but one day of the submission of application forms, only 2514 forms were submitted against 9680 seats available in the city. Me3anwhile, the picture is exactly opposite for the science stream. As against 17,270 seats, 22,981 forms have been submitted for science.

According to the statistics provided by the education department till Thursday a total of 59,643 application forms were sold and 48,824 forms were accepted. There are total 50,565 seats in the city for class 11. As against the seats, forms submitted are less. But there is no parity in proportion of sale of forms and submission for arts and science stream. "The seats for the arts stream are going to remain vacant. But on the other hand, we may have to increase the seats for science stream," said G K Mhamane, deputy director, education department.

Mhamane however clarified that, as there were around 5000 students who had submitted two forms, one for science stream and other for commerce (English medium) stream, there would be no crisis situation. "We have talked to some of the colleges in terms of increasing seats of science stream in case the situation demands," he said.

For commerce stream there are 20,640 seats to grab and till Thursday 22,919 forms have been submitted.

Meanwhile, the central admission committee has decided to keep open the main coordination centre that is S P College open for sale and submission of forms. "According to timetable Thursday was the last day for sale and submission of forms. But there was a request from some of the students to postpone the deadline. Accordingly we are keeping the S P College centre open on Friday (July 4) also," said Mhamane.

A provisional merit list for the bifocal course admission will be put up on July 4 at Fergusson, Garware, S P and Nowrosjee Wadia College and Mhalsakant High School. As many as 410 applications have come for the bifocal seats. "Students can submit their grievances on the provisional merit list in the next two days. On July 7 we will display the final merit list at S P and Fergusson College and on July 8 seats will be allotted according to the table admission system to be held at Fergusson College," said D C Newase, deputy district professional education and training officer.
