In a bid to recover its revenue from the large number of property tax defaulters, the Pune Municipal Corporation today urged the 13,465 defaulters to pay up their dues before July 31 and warned that their names would be published in newspapers. The PMC said that it will also discontinue civic facilities like water and drainage to the defaulters and may also take the drastic step of seizing their properties.
"There are 737 defaulters with pending dues of over Rs 5 lakh, 4,863 defaulters with dues of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh and 7,865 defaulters with pending dues between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh," PMC Tax Assessment and Collection Officer Vilas Kanade said in a Press statement.
The civic administration has a target of collecting Rs 475 crore in property tax for 2008-09, he said. All 14 ward offices have been asked to carry out door-to-door surveys and collect information on the defaulters.

The PMC, in accordance with the law, would also take custody of the property for which the tax has been defaulted, he informed, adding that civic facilities to the property would be discontinued, if necessary.
The list of defaulters is available at all ward offices and the tax department of the PMC main building.
