Pune University to have 3,000 more foreign studentsBy Riti, Section Education
Around 3,000 foreign students are expected to be added to the existing 14,000 students by the end of the ongoing international admissions for the academic year 2008-09 at the University of Pune's (UoP) International Students' Centre (ISC).
The ISC is the nodal agency for all foreign admissions to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses, besides doctoral studies (Ph.D) and certificate programmes at the university-affiliated colleges and recognised institutions. A large chunk of these international students come under the scholarships granted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), while the rest comprises self-financed students, people of Indian origin (PIO) and non-resident Indians (NRIs) from the west Asia and the south-east Asia. "This year, the centre has so far received 3,000 pleas from over 80 countries for UG and PG courses and an estimated 1,000 more for certificate programmes like ELICIS and short-term courses, and doctoral studies," an ISC official told TOI on Wednesday. Post-scrutiny, these pleas are expected to be shortlisted to overall 3,000 provisional admissions, the official said. Click on Full Story for more.
All foreign admissions effect on a provisional basis before they get confirmed following the formalities, which includes visa processing, the official said.
In April this year, the ISC was at the centre of a raging row over the alleged irregularities in admissions to PIOs and NRIs that occurred over a period of five years, beginning 2001-02. Members of the Poona University Teachers Association (PUTA) even staged a day-long agitation in front of the ISC to highlight the issue. Vice-chancellor of UoP Narendra Jadhav had then ordered a comprehensive special audit of the ISC functioning over the last five to six years, by a Mumbai-based expert firm. On April 30, the UoP management council also assigned a four-member panel under senior academician Sunanda Pawar, to issue fresh guidelines for smooth implementation of international admissions for 2008-09. The panel, which also comprised senior council member Sarjerao Nimse and law experts Dilip Ukey and Sureshchandra Bhosale, submitted its report to the university nearly two weeks ago, recommending guidelines and norms for admissions to foreign nationals, PIOs and NRIs. The row resulted in a `slight' delay in the commencement of admissions but the UoP authorities insisted that the admission process would complete on time. Source:The Times Of India 17thJuly2008.
