Villagers get their due :PMC Approves Rs 1 Cr For Road Works In Mhalunge

Following villagers' threat to stop completion of the stadium and other development activities for the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG), the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed road works worth Rs 1 crore in the Mhalunge village.

Scheduled for October, the CYG will take place at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium in Balewadi. Various infrastructure works, including roads, are being carried out here by the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations. But, the Mhalunge village has remained deprived of any development benefits, despite giving 132 acres of its land for the construction of the stadium.

It may be noted, the villagers had earlier held agitations over lack of basic facilities -- like water, roads and electricity -- in their village. They had submitted their demands to the municipal corporations in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, district collector, police commissioner and sports director.

The PMC has now tabled a proposal before the standing committee that Rs 1.4 crore be allotted for development of the main road, going towards the stadium, as also the other internal roads. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission funds are not available for the work and the village falls outside the city limit.

Therefore, under the BPMC Act, the PMC has sought the standing committee's special permission to use civic funds for the work.

The PMC has proposed construction of a 1.7 km long road approaching the stadium and the internal roads would also be repaired. The standing committee is likely to approve the proposal on Tuesday.
