Yet another glittering jewel has been added to Bandra, the queen of Mumbai suburbs - a swank new skywalk, built at a cost of Rs.136 million.

The skywalk will benefit over half a million train commuters and office-goers proceeding to the Bandra-Kurla Complex, a major suburban commercial hub developed over the past ten years.

Inaugurating the skywalk, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Tuesday this was the first of the 50 skywalks being constructed at strategic locations all over Mumbai to ease congestion and provide faster access to railway stations.

Promising the long-suffering Mumbaikars better public infrastructure, Deshmukh said that apart from these skywalks, the work on the first phase of metro-railway has already started while the second phase will be taken up shortly.

In addition, the work on the proposed Monorail will be taken up after the monsoon, he announced.

Deshmukh added that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) - the nodal agency entrusted with developing major infrastructural projects in and around the city - has taken up a feasibility survey to construct an underground road from Worli to Nariman Point in south Mumbai. The survey report is expected to be submitted within a month.

The skywalk, almost a kilometre long, will take the people from Bandra station right up to the Western Express Highway junction, near the existing Kala Nagar flyover, bypassing local hurdles like the Behrampada slums. After a couple of months, it will be extended up to the Bandra-Kurla railway Terminus nearby.

Among the well-known residents in the vicinity are Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Indian cricketing idol Sachin Tendulkar -- apart from prominent intellectuals and litterateurs.

Barely two kilometers away is the starting point of the recently-completed mega-project, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which will be thrown open to traffic by January 2009.

Of the proposed 49 more skywalks, 26 will come in the vicinity of railway stations on Western Railway, 19 on Central Railway and 4 on the Harbour Line.
