The first National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination for 2007-08, which is part of an ambitious Rs 220 crore centrallyfunded scheme for talented students from the economically backward classes (EBC), has been scheduled for August 17.

The scholarship chance is for EBC students whose parents' total annual income is less than Rs 1.50 lakh. Also, it will cover only schools run by the government, aided organisations and local self-governing bodies like municipal corporation and municipal councils.

Way ahead

  • iden national meanscum-merit scholarship exam on August 17
  • 11,680 students from Maharashtra to get Rs 500 per month scholarship
  • Scheme meant for economically backward class students

Students who have cleared their class VIII exam with minimum 55 per cent marks (50 pc for reserved category) or are studying in class IX will be eligible for the exam. Those who will qualify the minimum prescribed benchmark will start getting a monthly scholarship grant of Rs 500 each up to class XII.

Maharashtra State Council for Examinations (MCSE) commissioner Ram Ithape told reporters here that in Maharashtra, the MCSE, an autonomous body of the state government that conducts exams, has been entrusted with the task of conducting the NMMS 2007-08 exam.

He said that 11,680 EBC students from the state will get a monthly scholarship grant on qualifying the exam. This is the highest number of students among the scholarships allotted to various states in the country as part of the NMMS scheme, he said. The scheme is being implemented by the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT).

Ithape said the scheme was announced last year, but the NMMS exam for 2007-08 could not be conducted then owing to paucity of time and the need for finalising various details. "This year, the respective state governments have been given the task of conducting the 2007-08 exam and the 2008-09 edition would be conducted on a uniform nation-wide pattern in November 2008, i.e. two months after the first exam," he said.

Consequently, eligible students appearing for the NMMS 2007-08 exam will receive a onetime scholarship grants of Rs 6,000 each for the entire year. "This factor alone should draw a high number of EBC students to the new exam," he said.

The NMMS exam will comprise two parts, i.e. mental ability test (MAT) and scholastic ability test (SAT) covering social sciences, science and mathematics. Students can get their forms from their respective schools and the last date for submission is July 11, Ithape said. The examination fee per student is Rs 50.
