Japanese information technology company NEC Corporation, IT services and solutions company CMC Limited and City Corporation Limited signed an agreement on Friday to develop a fully digital city at Amanora township here.

The agreement provides for supply of technology backbone, including high capacity servers and other communication devices by the NEC and integration and delivery solution by CMC Limited.

City Corporation managing director Aniruddha Deshpande told media that the project comprises digitally enabling the 1.5-crore sq.ft. township at a cost of Rs 150 per sq.ft. The project will be implemented over the
next three years.

Prasad Rangnekar (vicepresident, emerging technologies, CMC) said the project will act as a proof of concept for digital townships.

It will transcend the limits of access-control mechanism or video-cameras for safety to create an all-pervasive transaction system which will encompass e-commerce and e-governance.

"A single smart card based system will enable the residents to access different segments of the township, pay bills, or purchases items of daily needs online," he said.

The process will involve back-end integration with banks, retailers and government agencies, he added.

Rangnekar said the company has done similar integration for offices, hospitality, healthcare or scientific research organisations, though this was the first residential real estate project it would be doing.

Deshpande said the idea of a digital city will be far wider than fire-alarms or safety mechanism and will offer every household a `smart console' to transact a variety of work sitting at home.
