Memoirs Of A Township, PCMC Plans A Book On The History Of The Twin TownsBy sachiv, Section Pune Municipal Corporation
With a population of nearly 15 lakh, Pimpri-Chinchwad is today a bustling twin township widely known as a major industrial hub. It is home to some of the leading automobile majors in the country.
While the city's transformation as a major commercial centre has occurred over the last few decades only, Pimpri-Chinchwad has a rich history and culture dating back several hundred years. As not many people are aware of this, the municipal corporation has taken upon itself the task of coming out with a special memoir which will enlist the facts and features, the traditions and culture of the past to give a clear picture to readers of how the present day city came into being.

The reason for this grand gesture is because the municipal corporation is celebrating its silver jubilee year. The corporation has already started work on the memoir, appointing key persons to compile information about Pimpri-Chinchwad from various sources. They, in turn, have contacted the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, the Bharat Itihas Samshodhak Mandal and also referred to the government gazettes.
One man involved in the project is P.R. Ahirrao, a professor in the township. Ahirrao, who is a historian, has done an elaborate study on the old temples in and around Pimpri-Chinchwad. The municipal corporation has also contacted the archaeology department as well as educational institutes to contribute to the project. The archaeology department has provided the PCMC with nearly 1,500 documents listing the historical facts about the villages in and around Pimpri-Chinchwad. The documents, however, are all written in old Modi script and after much trouble, the PCMC has enlisted the services of S.D. Shinde, to translate the documents into Marathi. According to sources, the finished work should run into three or four volumes. The municipal corporation has already listed some historical facts about Pimpri-Chinchwad on its website. It says the city was once the capital of king Bhoj, the well-known king who ruled over 2000v ago. Bhosari, which is in Pimpri-Chinchwad, got its name from Bhojapuri, which was the capital of king Bhoj. Pimpri-Chinchwad is also close to the temple towns of Dehu and Alandi while Chinchwad is also famous for the Moraya Gosavi Samadhi temple on the banks of the Pavana river. The construction of the Moraya Gosavi temple began in 1650 and was completed in 1720. Source: Times News Network, 13-2008
