Twin Township Aims To Be Hawker Free, PCMC Starts Process To Implement Policy To Clear ZonesBy Mrs Gupta, Section News
Initiating the process for implementing hawkers policy in Pimpri-Chinchwad in which the main roads and congested areas of the twin township will be made hawkers-free zones, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), for the first time, has come out with a list of 6,820 hawkers, stall owners and street side vendors.
As per the hawkers policy, all hawkers will be given identity cards and they will be assigned particular areas in which they will have to conduct their business. The hawkers policy will not be applicable to persons selling items on handcarts but they will not be allowed to conduct business in no-hawking zones. While the municipal corporation would announce the hawkers-free zones later, broadly, the policy says that all important roads under JNNURM and the main congested areas in the city will be declared as hawkers-free zones. A central advisory committee comprising mayor, municipal commissioner and other important office-bearers will be formed for overall implementation of the hawkers policy. In addition, there will be separate ward office-level committees and there will also be an implementation committee. The draft policy says that there are about 10,000 unauthorised hawkers in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The municipal corporation has so far given licences to only 797 stall owners. The corporation conducted a survey and has identified a total of 6,820 hawkers. The number is expected to increase as the figures are based on survey conducted till February this year. The town planning department has identified 899 locations where the hawkers can be rehabilitated. The expenses for rehabilitating the hawkers will be borne equally by the corporation and the beneficiary. The corporation has also come out with the eligibility criteria for hawkers, which states that hawkers staying in Pimpri-Chinchwad since 1995 and still doing business will be eligible for rehabilitation. The municipal corporation will provide all the necessary facilities in the hawkers zones. A list of all eligible hawkers has been put up at the four ward offices of the municipal corporation. The corporation has invited suggestions and objections from hawkers before May 15 regarding the list, additional municipal commissioner S.D. Dumbre stated.TNN
