PMPML To Start Buses For Women, Service On Select Routes From May 2By Mrs Gupta, Section Local Transportation
Here is some good news for women. On the suggestion of mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) is starting `women special buses' from May 2 on some select routes.
Speaking to TOI, managing director of PMPML Subrao Patil said the transport body has started getting new buses from private contractors. Of the total 250 buses to be procured, the first 50 buses will be run as women special buses on all important routes. Five buses each will be run on routes from Kothrud, Swargate, Hadapsar, Pune-Ahmednagar road, Bhosari and Nigdi. These buses will ply during peak hours -- in the morning and evening, and will not only benefit women commuters, but also reduce the rush in other buses. The inaugural bus will be started from Hadapsar and will be flagged off by mayor Bhosale. While the buses from private contractors were expected to arrive in the first week of March, there was a delay due to certain difficulties about body building of buses. There was also a debate as to whether the buses should have a single wind shield in the front. Meanwhile, the PMPML is also planning to purchase nearly 125 buses on its own. Patil said the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations have already made a provision of Rs 25 crore and Rs 10 crore respectively for providing financial assistance for the same. `Most buses now have safety measures in place' Click on "Full Story" For Read This Point...
`Most buses now have safety measures in place'
The PMPML, which had set May 1 as the deadline for installing bottom side guards in all its buses, has almost completed the task, PMPML's managing director Subrao Patil said on Wednesday. "The work is nearly complete. There are now very few buses without the bottom side guards. I reviewed the work on Tuesday. There was earlier a shortage of steel, but that has also been sorted out", Patil told TOI. He said that out of the 1088 buses in the fleet 844 now have been fitted with the side guards. Installation of the side guards, between the front wheel and the rear wheels of the buses on either side, is a mandatory safety requirement -- as it prevents anyone from coming directly under the wheels. However, most PMPML buses lacked this safety facility. The issue of the absence of side guards came into focus after the death of eleven-year-old Atharva Dongre on March 11.
