Women achievers from various fields participated in a seminar jointly organised by the National Sports Trust and Press Club to celebrate the "175 days to go for the Commonwealth Youth Games," event held at the Boat Club on April 20. Not only did they discuss the various challenges faced by women from their respective fraternities, but have also taken up the mantle of making the third Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 a resounding success. The games serves as the trials for the ensuing 2010 Commonwealth Games slated to be held in Delhi.
The seminar was presided over by city Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale and former Asian Women's Hockey Association president Arnavaz Damania. The mayor felt that it was the responsibility of Pune city in making any games be it Olympics, Asian Games or the prestigious CYG to make it a grand success. She said, "PMC has accepted the challenge to conduct the games successfully. The Central and the state governments have extended their whole hearted support and also rendered financial help." Damania highlighted her own experiences and made a pertinent point that women have great future in sports. Maharashtra Olympic Association secretary-general Prof Balasaheb Landge stressed that women will be given their rightful place in the Olympic movement in future. Also, addressing the august gathering, Athletic Federation of India joint honorary secretary Pralhad Sawant requested women from diverse fields to come forward and extend their continual support to make the Youth Games successful which would help in placing Pune on the arena of international sports. National Sports Trust president Manisha Ghate, the recent recipient of the Jijamata Award, said Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has reserved 30 per cent quota for women to increase their participation in the field of sports. Former deputy director of sports, Salima Khan recalled the moments of the National Games held in Pune in 1994. "Despite the Latur earthquake, the games were conducted successfully on time." Speaking on the occasion, DYSP, Sushma Chavan said, "Security within the Games Village and the Pune city during the Youth Games in October is our top most priority and a huge planning is already on in the same regard.
