Travelling Through Ganjwe Chowk On Lal Bahadur Shastri Road Is A Dust-Ridden Disaster

Lal Bahadur Shastri road appears to be one of the most neglected thoroughfares in the city. Road development work here took years to be completed, during which time the sides of the road were dug up and remained in this state for ages.

Today, the dug-up patches have been filled, but the PMC staff seems to have forgotten to clear the rubble.

The worst affected spot is Ganjwe chowk where an area in the middle of the road had been dug up. Today, the road at the chowk has all but disappeared. The stretch of road from Ganjwe chowk to Poona hospital chowk is almost as bad.

While it is impossible for pedestrians to walk to the other side of the chowk because of the mess -- motorists also face a tough time driving past the chowk.

Vehicles coming from the Patrakar Bhavan and turning left to go towards Alka Talkies find it difficult to get through the narrow lane because of the debris there.

Official Speak
It is the job of the contractor who had undertaken the road work and the laying of stormwater drains to clear the rubble. We have been repeatedly issuing letters to him asking him to clear it. We will soon be issuing another notice to him and taking action against him. Manisha Ghate Kasba Vishrambaugwada ward committee chairperson

Shopkeepers in the area complain at the amount of dust that is raised by passing vehicles.
"Not only has our business been affected because the approach way to our shops is filled with heaps of rubble, making it difficult for customers to come in, but the uncleared rubble creates so much dust that we have to be careful about our food items," said a sweet shop owner at Ganjwe chowk.

"Driving a two-wheeler here is a laborious task as you have to be extra careful not to fall off. One has to look out for other vehicles as this road is an extremely busy one, and you also have to keep an eye on the bumps. And if you don't cover your face, rest assured there will be a layer of dust on one's face," Shailaja Sawant, a student preparing for competitive exams said.

Another regular commuter, Abhijeet Shirolkar, said that passing through Ganjwe chowk is frustrating because, due to the smaller carriageway, the chowk usually faces traffic jams.
