The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG), 2008 on Saturday kicked off an electronic waste (e-waste) management programme under its "Green Games" initiative. The first e-waste awareness workshop was conducted for Jetkings Info, a hardware-training institute, which was followed by a skit on reduction of e-waste.
Ajay Ojha, head of Air Quality Management Cell, Pune Municipal Corporation, Sanjay Gandhi, director of Jetkings Info, Shankar Kalmani, chairman of Sarathi NGO, Jyoti Prabha, project officer Green Games CYG and Bhagwan Kadu.
E-waste consists of computers, old printers, keyboards, cellular phones, which contain hazardous constituents, which are dangerous to environment.
Dr Ojha said, "Under the "Green Games" initiative, we have received a good platform to sensitise youth and the IT companies about the dangers of e-waste. If other cities of India follow the suit, it would help in bringing healthier changes in the environment."
Kalmani said that under this programme they are targeting 40 colleges and 10 top IT companies in Pune.
