Angry Residents File Complaint Against Yerwada Corporator

Under "pressure" from local Shiv Sena corporator Sanjay Bhosale, the residents of Yogesh Enclave Co-operative Housing Society Ltd in the Deccan College ward of Yerwada have submitted a written complaint to the Yerwada police station, on Tuesday against their elected representative.

The episode started two months back, with Bhosale's alleged demand for space in the building to set up his office, which the society residents refused. Following this, Bhosale's men allegedly disconnected society's water supply, forcing them to procure water from the piggery nearby.

The complaint states that two followers of Bhosale had approached the members of the Yogesh Enclave to provide them some space for setting up their office. Later the corporator's men allegedly dumped big stones in the society drainage chamber. These men later demanded Rs 3,000 from the society to clean up the chamber.

But they left the work unfinished and later brought 10-12 people, who snapped the water connection. The efforts by the residents to resolve the issue at the PMC ward office did not bear fruit.

The residents then went to Bhosale to complain about the matter, who demanded Rs 60,000 from each society member, states the complaint. Bhosale further troubled the residents by claiming that the society building itself is unauthorised and threatened to raze it.

When contacted, corporator Sanjay Bhosale denied all charges. "The charges being levelled against me are untrue. I have a big office in Yerwada, so why should I set up another office? In fact, that particular building does not have a completion certificate. The residents have not even paid taxes for a long time. Furthermore, they wanted illegal water connections, which I opposed, and hence they are speaking against me."

The incessant climbing of stairs to fetch water have taken a toll on the health of the residents, especially the women. "Most of the residents are middle-aged and suffer from health ailments like heart disease, rheumatism and arthritis. Thanks to the weight of the buckets filled with water, as well as the climbing exercise, their health has started deteriorating," said one of the women residents.

The residents even complained that Bhosale and his men are not allowing the society to raise a security wall around or even to close the gate saying that the building is without permission.

Bhosale too filed a complaint against Micheal Brown, head of the local Congress unit, who has been spearheading the residents' agitation.

On Wednesday, when Bhosale's karyakartas arrived at the building and the contractors of the corporation started working, Brown too reached the spot and told them to stop the work, as the proximity of the drainage to the drinking water lines could create a problem.

Bhosale allegedly threatened Brown warning him `not to interfere in the issue'. Though the work stopped temporarily, both Brown and Bhosale filed complaints against each other in the Lakshminagar police chowki.

"The people from PMC also visited the spot and agreed that the work - of the drainage line in close proximity to the water pipeline - was bound to cause damage and needs to be stopped," said Simranjit Singh, one of the residents.
