Lease Over, Department Of Journalism To Shift Out Of Ranade Institute CampusBy Mrs Gupta, Section News
The Department of Communication and Journalism, which is located at the Ranade Institute on Fergusson College road, will soon be shifted to the University of Pune (UoP) campus. Though the exact date is not declared, officials at the department said that the shift could take place any day.
The land where Ranade Institute has been located since its inception in 1966, was originally owned by the well known Shirole family and was given to Servants of India Society on a 99-year lease in 1910. The Society further sub-leased it to the UoP in 1952, which got over in 2005.
Fact File At that time the total cost of construction of the building was Rs 1,200. The Servants of India Society institute late gave it to the University of Pune on a sub-lease in 1952 at a nominal rent of Rs 15 per year. Interestingly enough, the UoP continues to give the Servants of India Society the annual rent of Rs 15. Despite repeated queries, Dilip Shirole, the owner of the land also refused to comment on what the family proposed to do with the land now synonymous with Ranade institute. Confirming the news of relocation, Arun Panse, manager Estates Department, UoP said, " We have got a proposal for a mass communication and journalism building in the university campus." Milind Deshmukh, secretary, Servants of India Society, said, "The University has been conducting journalism and foreign language courses at the Ranade institute since 1966. The contract has now ended - in fact it ended in 2005 - and they should be shifting the courses to the university now."
According to Narendra Dengle, architect and member of heritage committee, the Ranade institute is a Grade 2 heritage structure that means that its importance is not limited to the history of the city, but is also significant in terms of the architecture, culture and environment of the city. Also it belongs to the historic pre-independence era and is associated with Mahadeo Govind Ranade who occupies a place of pride in the annals of Indian history, which further adds to its value. Dengle said that while preserving the building is of utmost importance, the purpose of the building can be altered according to the heritage rules. For example, a structure that was used for educational purposes can be converted into a coffee shop or a heritage hotel provided the assets contributing to the heritage value of the building are kept intact. "The owners can also construct a new structure surrounding the heritage building, even if this affects the visibility of the building from the main road," Dengle said.
