The process for implementation of the bus body building code would begin soon. The code, which focuses on enhancing safety aspects in buses, would be applicable to all bus body builders.
The government had announced to set up accreditation centres for bus body builders and Bhosari-based Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) is likely to be one of the zonal centres. The accreditation will be given based on resources and capacity of the companies to build buses.
It has been found that the work of bus body building has been largely unorganised and that buses are built by small scale industries and even by road-side garages. Ideally, buses need to be built as per stipulated safety norms and for this the government has proposed an accreditation system. Experts said that implementation of the code would happen gradually and that happens, buses would be more safer and comfortable.
The bus body building code enlists several safety aspects such as body structure strength, stability, requirements for power operated service doors, automatic doors and emergency exits.
The CIRT had last month organised a workshop for bus body builders introducing them to the code. The government also has plans to implement a truck body building code in the next two years.
