Illegal Vegetable Vendors Are Creating Nuisance For People Living In New Friends Colony In Kothrud

Avegetable market right outside your home can be very convenient. It would save a lot of hassle, especially when you urgently need some vegetables or are simply feeling lazy. But, as residents of the New Friends Co-operative Housing Society on Paud Road, in Kothrud, have to know that the vegetable market outside their society compound is more of a nuisance than the desired convenience, more so on Sundays.

Despite being a blatant encroachment, complaints regarding these vegetable vendors, who boldly occupy the road outside the society to sell vegetables and fruits, have yielded no result. The vendors not only block the entrance to the compound, but also create a difficulty inside it, complain residents of the New Friends Society, which has 260 members and 12 buildings with almost 1,000 residents.

"We have complained to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on several occasions. But all that has fallen on deaf ears," says M.M. Bandishte, secretary of the housing society. While the encroachment is a daily affair, Sunday being a holiday (for the anti-encroachment officials), these vendors fearlessly occupy a larger chunk of the road outside the Society than usual, he says.

"This unauthorised gathering of hawkers leads to traffic jams, resulting in a lot of chaos outside the society on Sundays," says senior citizen Vinayak Joshi. Moreover, the road turns into a garbage dump once the vendors shut shop, reveal residents. "The road is cleaned only the next day," says Joshi.

Not only do the vendors fearlessly use the toilets in the society's compound, the 12 buildings within the compound have become a hiding place for them when, and if, an anti-encroachment squad does take action, say the members of the society, says a resident, Pradeep Paralikar.

Since Sunday is also a day for guests and entertaining, it becomes extremely embarrassing when the guests have to actually keep waiting on the road to enter the premises because of the congestion there, says Anil Kulkarni, another resident. Even the business of shops in the society is getting affected, says Pravin Jain, owner of Pravin Stores.
