The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appealed to citizens to vacate their properties that are hindering road widening work on Shivaji road, Nehru road, Bajirao and Mayur DP road in Kothrud. The PMC is launching a major road widening drive under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Mission (JNNURM).

In a press statement, municipal commissioner Pravinsinh Pardeshi said roads falling in the central city area are going to be widened. Shivaji road will be widened from Simla office to Jedhe chowk, while the Nehru road will be widened from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan to Shivneri road to Market Yard. The Bajirao road will be widened from Mitramandal chowk to Shaniwarwada. The Mayur DP road would also be widened. The Shivaji road will be widened up to 50 ft, while Nehru road will be widened up to 80 ft. and Bajirao road will be widened up to 50 ft.

From March 8, the PMC will launch a drive to demolish illegal and hazardous construction hindering the widening work. "Considering the drive, property owners should vacate their properties to avoid damage to the properties," the press release said.

This is for the first time that the PMC would carry out widening of major roads in the central city area at once. Pardeshi appealed the people to co-operate with the PMC.

Meanwhile, the PMC carried out anti-encroachment drive at various parts of the city. About 10,000 sq.ft. area near Sant Kabir chowk was vacated. Another 70 properties will also be removed from the area for road widening.

In Warje , six illegal constructions on hill top and hill slope were demolished. In Aranyashwar eight slums and other illegal constructions were demolished. In Wadgaon 2,200 sq.ft. illegal structures were demolished.
