Flat Water Tax Proposal To All Consumers In PCMC PendingBy ugesh sarkar, Section News
The proposal to charge water tax at a flat rate to all consumers was kept pending at the general body meeting of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Monday as the concerned officials failed to answer corporators' queries.
Independent corporator Maruti Bhapkar and NCP corporator R S Kumar had tabled a proposal stating that citizens should be charged at a flat rate of Rs 2.50 per 1,000 litres for all types of water consumption, instead of the current slabs which are inconsistent. Bhapkar said that the corporation annually collects Rs 1,160 per household as water tax which is quite exhorbitant. The PCMC has already collected the tax for the year ending March 2009. Still, the civic body will charge (tax) as per the meter readings from this month. Citizens will have to pay exorbitant charges and corporators will have to answer their questions, he said. Kumar said that former municipal commissioner Dilip Band had assured 24-hour water supply to Pradhikaran residents. "This is yet to become a reality. Instead, the supply has gone down from 42 MLD to just 26 MLD," he alleged.
NCP corporator Mahesh Landge pointed out that the residents of Dighi and Charholi areas have received collective water tax bills for the past four years and are having tough time paying the amount. Another NCP corporator Meena Patil pointed out that residents in her ward received bills of the past seven years in lump sum. Congress corporator Shrirang Barne asked for the total number of water meters installed in the municipal limits and the number of those that were yet to be installed. Since the officials could not respond to any of the queries, the proposal was kept pending. Source: Times Of IndiaFlat water tax proposal in PCMC pending
