Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) completes Baner Subway In Record Time

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials are glad as they have managed to complete the Baner subway, along with the necessary road work in the city, in time. The Baner subway was hailed as the most daunting task before the civic body among all development works planned ahead of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG). In order to complete this project, the PMC had even sought help from the private developers, whose 1,000 labourers worked day and night to complete the mission.

The subway has been constructed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and has cost Rs 7.26 crore. The subway measures 41 metres long, 23.5 metres wide and 5.5 metres high. This has facilitated the vehicles to cross the national highway without dangerously posing any obstacle to the highway traffic.

The construction has been done in compliance with the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards, which means that even large and heavy vehicles like a double-decker bus or big trailer can easily pass through it. Addressing the mediapersons on Monday night, during the site visit, Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi lauded the efforts put in by the civic departments. "All the civic departments -- land acquisition, electricity and garden -- worked in sync with each other. Therefore, the work could be finished in time," Pardeshi said.

PMC city engineer Prashant Waghmare said that the PMC has completed the task in about seven months. "The work order was given in February. Though the work had been given to a contractor, we employed additional labourers in the final phase of the subway. The contractor's labourers were 450, while the labourers from the private developers were about 1,000. We had to employ machinery on a large scale. There were 40 JCB machines and 15 transit mixers."

He added, "It was only after 17 days of laying the slab of the subway, we confidently allowed the traffic to move above, whereas normally the road is opened to public only after 28 days. This was because, the slab got more than the required strength in a quick time." TIE
