MSEDCL Still Faces Material Shortage, Consumers Forced To Buy Cables, Fuses, Meters For MaintenanceBy Sumit Kumar, Section Electricity
Stating that shortage of maintenance material was still plaguing the Pune zone of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), city-based Sajag Nagrik Manch (SNM) on Tuesday urged MSEDCL to issue directives to its staff asking them not to make consumers buy the required material.
In a memorandum submitted to S.P. Nagtilak, chief engineer of the Pune zone, founder of SNM Vivek Velankar said his organisation has received complaints from consumers saying they have had to buy materials like cables, fuses and meters for maintenance work. "Maintenance and other material scarcity is an important issue in the Pune zone. We have been following up with MSEDCL to make this material available. They have been informed that even requisitioned material for maintenance is not provided on time and in adequate quantity," the memorandum said, adding that this has resulted in poor customer service. Recently, the managing director of MSEDCL promised he would ensure there was no shortage of any material in Pune zone. "We have been receiving complaints from consumers which shows that the situation has still not improved. As a result, MSEDCL staff are forcing consumers to buy cables, fuses and other material," Velankar said. Click on "Full Story" For More...
He added that needless to mention it was the duty and responsibility of the MSEDCL to ensure uninterrupted supply up to the meter at the consumers' premises. The power company cannot ask consumers to buy any maintenance material up to this point of supply, he said, adding that apparently even the single phase and three phase meters were in short supply. "All this leads to consumer harassment and they are left with no choice but to buy the material themselves."
Velankar also urged Nagtilak to issue a circular to "all your officers instructing them not to bother consumers for material requirements." The memorandum stated, "Also, in every MSEDCL office a notice board needs to be displayed informing consumers not to pay money for material or purchase material from the market themselves. Any MSEDCL employee demanding such should be brought to the notice of the executive engineer of the division concerned." He also urged Nagtilak to vigorously follow up with the MSEDCL head office so that all the required material is received on time and consumers get the best possible service. It may be noted that Velankar had earlier sought information under the Right to Information Act, 2005, about the quantity of maintenance material received for Pune zone. The information given to him revealed that only 30 to 50 per cent of the required material was supplied to the zone. Source: Times Of India, October-08-2008
