Geographical Information System (GIS) Plan Misses Date With GamesBy Dr arvind, Section Commonwealth Youth Games 2008
It was originally a plan set to kick off before the Commonwealth Youth Games. Meeting the deadline before the CYG starts on October 12 seems unlikely. The Geographical Information System (GIS)-based project, being started by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), will nevertheless be available to citizens. But for that, they will have to wait at least till December.
It's part of the PMC's continuing effort to provide Information Technology (IT) enabled services. "The GIS facility is to help any citizen locate destinations and routes online. The plan was to introduce it before the games. The delay in approval has made it unlikely," PMC Chief Information Officer Anupam Saraph said. Data on hospitals, multiplexes, malls, gardens, parks, restaurants historical places has been collected for the base map available with the PMC, but the work to host it on the web was delayed as the proposal had been pending since May, he said. The first phase will be over by December and queries of citizens related to routes and locations, availability of public transport system and cycle tracks will be addressed through it, Saraph said. Citizens will be able to find the nearest garden, multiplex, shopping centre, bank, hospital or school at the click of a button.
The PMC would initially allow citizens to add to missing locations on the map, he said. The facility has multiple benefits and various departments of the civic body can also use it to give information of ongoing works, Saraph said. The dates on which the works are being undertaken can be displayed on the base map and the other departments as well as citizens can access it instead of calling up civic officials, he added.
