Grade separators: 1 giving trouble, PCMC to open 2 moreBy Dr arvind, Section Roads in Pune
Even as the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is struggling to keep the Pimpri grade separator up and running, it is all set to inaugurate two more grade separators one at Chinchwad and another at Akurdi on the Pune-Mumbai highway within its jurisdiction. The inauguration will take place in the presence of NCP chief Sharad Pawar and District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar around 3 pm on Saturday.
At 730 metre in length, the Chinchwad grade separator is the second longest of the three. It is nine metre wide and includes in its range two chowks -- Mahavir and Shivaji. The Akurdi grade separator is 560 metre in length and nine metre in width. The work on both the grade separators started in March 2006, three months after Pimpri grade separator was thrown open to the public. The Pimpri grade separator which is the longest at 795 metres was constructed at a cost of Rs 18 crore, but has failed to remain motorable. The construction of both Chinchwad and Akurdi grade separators have generated a lot of heat, especially after their costs jumped astronomically. The Akurdi one was initially set to cost Rs 14 crore, but later the civic adminstration said it would cost Rs 29 crore. Similarly, the Chinchwad grade separator has been constructed at cost of Rs 39 crore. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had stalled the construction of the Chinchwad grade separator after Congress leader Srirang Barne raised certain objections. A few months later, Deshmukh lifted the stay after hearing out the civic adminstration. With the construction of the two grade separators and the one already in place at Pimpri, the time taken to reach Nigdi from Bopodi on the Pune-Mumbai highway will come down drastically. Then municipal commissioner Dilip Band, during whose tenure the Pimpri grade separator was completed and two other grade separator work started, had maintained that it would take eight minutes to travel from Bopodi to Nigdi once grade separator work is completed. After Bopodi, there will be only one major signal -- that is at Nashik Phata chowk. Here too, the PCMC has planned an overbridge which will fly over road, rail and river and is being described as the unique one. Despite its inauguration over four years ago, the bridge work is yet to get cracking. Click on "Full Story" for more...
The entire Pune-Mumbai highway from Nigdi to Phugewadi has been concretised. Now, the only major irritant on the Pune-Mumbai highway is that of the nearly two kilometre stretch in Dapodi area where the army wall stands tall. City engineer Eknath Ugile said the Army compound wall will be pushed inside 19 metres and a new compound wall will be constructed by the PCMC. "The compound wall design, height and other related things are being discussed with Army officials. Once that is approved, we will start phase-wise removal of the wall."
Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma promised that the two new grade separators will live up to the standards set by the civic administration. "Both of them are looking good. I can assure about their quality. I have been keeping a watch on the work every alternate day," he said. "Instead of inter-locking grids, we have gone for tarring of the road. Despite heavy rain, the tarred surface has remained in order," said PCMC executive engineer D M Shirke. Inter-locking grids, said Shirke, had created problems on the Pimpri grade separator which had remained closed several times since its inauguration two years and half years ago.
