Civic body ready to supply the tenant info that the police need

If property owners and real estate agents fail to furnish details of their tenants, the civic administration is ready to supply the police with al the information at its disposal. Only, the police have not yet asked, though they have launched a drive against owners who don't supply tenant details.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) keeps a record of 5 lakh properties, of which 10,000 are listed as having been rented out or used for some other purpose other than as the owners' residences. If the owner himself lives on the property, the civic body gives a 40 per cent rebate on property tax; whenever an owner claims this, it is verified by civic inspectors. In case of new properties, the civic administration verifies all information with the developer.

"Around 2 per cent of the 5 lakh properties in the city don't avail the facility of tax rebate. These are considered to be either rented or being used for some non-residential purpose by the owner," said Vilas Kanade, PMC tax assessment and collection officer

"The information with the PMC can be useful to the police. We are ready to share the information, but there is no formal request from the police so far," PMC additional commissioner M S Devnikar said.

Additional Commissioner of Police Rajinder Singh is open to the idea. "We were unaware that such information is available with the PMC. The police are ready to approach them."

The PMC will soon seek details of tenant information being collected by the police so that it could be matched with the data with the PMC. "It is not possible for the PMC to recheck the status of the property, but a comparison of the information can always be made," Kanade said.

The ACP said the police would not mind sharing the information.

The ongoing drive against property owners for failing to submit tenant information has taken a back seat for now, with the police too busy with security for the Commonwealth Youth Games.
