PMT Applies The Brakes On Pollution,The Transport Body Makes Some Headway In Gas Emission

With as many as 370 15-year-old buses plying in the city, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has been one of the contributors towards vehicular air pollution in the city by way of harmful emissions.

However, efforts are being taken by the PMPML to reduce the emissions by phasing out the old buses and adding new buses with Euro III norms to the fleet. The PMPML recently purchased 200 buses with Euro III norms and has 200 buses with Euro II norms and I bus with Euro 1 norms.

Another initiative is being undertaken by PMPML to install retrofitting devices in 20 buses. The retrofitting devices have been designed after a year-long experiment by the National National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).

PMPML'S GAMEPLAN

  • Has 200 buses with Euro II norms and I bus with Euro 1 norms

  • Has purchased 200 buses with Euro III norms

  • Has installed retrofitting devices in 20 buses

  • Retrofitting devices work like a silencer to absorb exhaust as well noise

  • Buses with retrofit devices will be run for a year and will be tracked to understand the operational problems and performance

  • Buses have to maintain a norm and keep emissions below 65 Hartridge Smoke Unit. Diesel-driven vehicles must not exceed 65 HSU

The buses with retrofit devices will be run for a year and will be tracked to understand the operational problems and performance.

The retrofitting devices will work like a silencer to absorb exhaust as well noise will help reduce pollution.

Speaking to TOI, chief engineer S.M. Borse said that PMPML buses have to maintain a norm and keep their emissions below 65 Hartridge Smoke Unit (HSU is the basic unit for auto emission. Diesel-driven vehicles must not exceed 65 HSU).

He pointed out that the engine overhauling of old buses is undertaken by PMPML workers themselves. However, it was found that this did not bring about the desired quality in engines and the plan now is to get engine rehauling done by the bus company itself. "This will help maintain the quality of engine and indirectly reduce pollution," Borse said. The PMPML has also last year undertaken a pilot project to run buses on a combination of biodiesel and diesel.

While the experiments were conducted on 100 buses, it was determined that the combination of 20 per cent biodiesel and 80 per cent diesel gave the best results, with respect to pollution by reducing exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, particulate matter and unburned hydrocarbons.

However, since the prices of bio-diesel shot up, the idea of converting the entire fleet into diesel and bio-diesel was scrapped by the PMPML.
