The Pune police failed to enforce the midnight deadline on noise pollution during the Ganesh immersion processions on Tuesday night. Mandals had their loudspeakers and musical instruments on at full blast, showing a complete lack of civic sense.
While the Supreme Court directive had banned the use of loudspeakers and musical instruments after 10 pm, the state government extended this deadline till midnight, using its annual quota of 14 days when the deadline can be extended till midnight.
Violation of the deadline empowers the police to file cases against the violators under various sections of the Environment Act.
Pune police officials seemed to have taken a soft stand on the deadline issue after police commissioner Jayant Umranikar suffered a freak accident when he fell from a chariot of the Hind Tarun Mandal around 3.30 pm at Belbaug chowk. Umranikar sustained hand and back injuries and was taken to hospital.
