THE Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday issued a stop-work notice to the Nagori Muslim Misagar Jamat Trust for fencing land reserved for Hanging Garden near Sarasbaug. The fencing work, initiated by the Trust on the land, was brought to the PMC's notice by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists, who raised slogans against the civic body outside the General Body for failing to take charge of its own land.
Officials rushed to the site and issued the notice to the Trust to stop the work with immediate effect.
"The fencing was being done when our officials reached the site. But work has been stopped," PMC's city engineer Prashant Waghmare said.
PMC officials had in April faced opposition from the Trust and other members of the Muslim community when they reached the spot -- which houses the Adam Baug Masjid -- to remove the board that the Trust had put up, claiming the land was its property. The land, at a prime location near Sarasbaug, was reserved for a hanging garden according to the Development Plan, 1987. The civic administration acquired the land under the Town Planning Scheme, but the trust refused to stop claiming it to be private property.
