Censor rash driving scenes: Transport Commissionerate

Pune, January 11: Perturbed with increasing instances of rash and negligent driving after the Bollywood blockbuster Dhoom series, the State Transport Commissionerate (TC) is all set to write a letter to the Censor Board appealing to run scissors on the scenes depicting such behaviour.

Deputy regional transport officer (Mumbai Central) Sanjay Sasane said that the appeal letter is being drafted and will be sent within a week.

The TC office feels that instead of looking at films as a virtual world, youngsters try to incorporate whatever is shown in them. "The Commissionerate initiated the move after the transport commissioner S D Shinde himself noticed rash driving among youngsters while driving between Churchgate and Worli," Sasane said.

According to Sasane, the letter will state that in recent days, parameters like attitude and behaviour that judge a driver's skills are deteriorating since action packed films incite rash and negligent behaviour.

Meanwhile, the move comes as a blessing for the city's traffic branch. Police inspector Surendranath Deshmukh from Chatuhshrungi division says that incidences of rash driving have increased in the Deccan area, which has a large student community.

"To catch hold of erring drivers we have laid a trap from Good Luck chowk on Fergusson College Road till Dnyaneshwar Paduka chowk. But on several occasions, the trap fails ," he explained.

Police inspector Prabhakar Dhamale, incharge of Cantonment and Bundgarden division, says. "Rash driving is more amongst youngsters on roads which are wide and have less traffic," he says.

According to him, instances of rash driving have increased on roads towards Kondhwa, Kalyaninagar and Yerwada.

There are figures to support these claims. In 2006, the city has recorded an additional 53 cases of rash and negligent driving in comparison with the last year.
