Managing the data

It is an increasing common problem which most of the fast growing corporates are facing -- lack of proper data storage management. With the amount and volume of business ever increasing, there is a strong urgency for all the companies to have an effective data management process in place.

An effective management of data means availability of data all round the time and at every place, providing a strong back up to prevent any loss of data and streamline the whole processes, so that any redundant data is put aside and only important ones are stored in the system.

Says Soumitra Agarwal, marketing head Netapp, that provides hard discs for data storage and management for companies like UGS and others, "In the current economic climate, CIOs (chief information officers) live with constant budget cuts and staff reductions. The last thing they want is to plan for radically new storage requirements There's a change coming, however, that demands IT executives' attention today, so companies can avoid being buried in a sea of data. The redesign of parts and even assemblies is faster than finding the already existing ones rather than searching for already existing data in a company that does not have an effective system in place. This leads to a large amount of redundant data, errors and risks."

According to Robert Soderby, senior VP, Storage Foundation Group, Symantec, "Storage and server management solutions simplify the administration and management of heterogeneous environments, and provide continuous availability of mission-critical applications and helps to gain control of the complexities."

Effective management of product development engineering processes is key to addressing that most critical requirement -- time-to-market. And demanding environments such as the engineering services outsourcing impose specific requirements from an IT Infrastructure perspective. In this environment, the streamlining and availability of data for the engineering services outsourcing, manufacturing sector and IT and ITES industry ensures increasing user productivity, collaborative design (employees of a company collaboratively can work on the same design spread across the world), reduction in IT management cost and ensuring multi-protocol data access. Adds Agarwal, "The introduction of structured data storage is the basis for effective finding and re-use of product data."

Normally, the whole data management system comprises hard discs where data is stored, connected with a series of servers that provide the online transmission of data. In general, data is stored in the form of a cluster of files and integrated into system through tools that ensure protection, supply, a complete back up and centralised management of data.

Pune is major development center for Symantec that is a leading provider of end-to-end software products for management and storage of data for a host of Fortune 500 companies. Symantec Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 provides a complete solution for heterogeneous online storage management. It provides a standard set of integrated tools to centrally manage explosive data growth, maximise storage hardware investments, provide data protection and adapt to changing business requirements. Along with Veritas Command Central Storage, Veritas Storage Foundation Management Server, Netbackup it offers a complete end-to-end solution for the industry.
