Reeti Pandharipande takes a look at what prompted petite 21-year-old city girl, Savitri Bobde, to give up the luxuries of urban life and work for the empowerment of rural women
Twenty-one-year-old Savitri Bobde had every comfort life had to offer. Hailing from a family of legal luminaries, (her grandfather was the Advocate General of Maharashtra and her father is a High Court judge) Savitri grew up in a palatial home in upscale Nagpur. She graduated from the prestigious St Xavier's College, Mumbai and was keen on taking up fashion designing.
But four months ago, Savitri got involved in a project that fundamentally changed the way she perceived life. She was visiting Yavatmal district for a research on rural life. "However, I realised that a few days in a rural area was not enough to understand rural life and its problems and I ended up working with MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, which is committed to the empowerment of rural communities through information and communication technology," says the chirpy Savitri.
"When I went to Yavatmal, I knew it would be a huge cultural shock. But, to my surprise, I took to it like a fish to water. In fact, I intend staying on for a year or two," she reveals.
Enjoying her rural stint, Savitri is working hard to empower village women via technology and communication. That's not all! She also arranges trainers for women who want to set up small-scale industries. Besides this, Savitri also helps the villagers develop kitchen gardens and advises them how to cultivate nutritious vegetables that would take care of their food requirements. The foundation plans to start a novel project called e-medicine, wherein hospitals will be connected to the centre,to make it easier for the centre to get in touch with the doctor in case of an emergency. "I am deriving immense satisfaction from my stint here. I think this is the best decision of my life," Savitri says, with contentment.

However, it hasn't been smooth sailing for Savitri. "There were times when I felt like giving it all up and going back home. Even a seemingly insignificant thing like having to wash my own clothes for the first time made me homesick," she recalls.
Moreover certain aspects of rural life that Savitri was never exposed to, did unnerve her. There were instances when she met with women, who were beaten up by their husbands and needed help. She also saw men injured during fights and farming accidents, covered in blood. "God, I could have done without those gory sights," she recounts. Yet, her battle is far from over. "The villagers are taking time to accept that a thin petite bacchhi can actually help them in any way," she says. But she takes it all in her stride and says it is part of her learning experience. She is beginning to understand the problems of the villagers.Savitri believes that to catalyse any change in society, the process needs to begin at the grass-root level."A village is the best university in the world. Everybody should experience it for at least a year of their life. It is the best learning ground for developmental studies," she opines.
Quiz her about her future plans and pat comes the reply, "I plan to pursue developmental studies after I complete my stint at Waifad from Sussex University, London. This will help me understand what is more important - mega dams or small water projects? It will help me know if aping the West is going to get us anywhere. I will know if sky-scrapers or six-lane highways are indicators of progress," she shares. Of course, at the moment she is trying to understand the economics of rural India and once she has the requisite knowledge, she plans to bridge the gap between rural and urban India.
Talking about her plans ten years from now,Savitri says,"I am not averse to joining politics. If I do succeed in politics,my agenda will be to lobby for major policy decisions for public welfare and concrete rural development."
