BANKS SWAMP PUNE B-SCHOOLS

IN Pune, B-schools are buzzing with activity, as the placement season sets in.The financial sector companies lead the pack to place students. There are jobs everywhere, despite the city being home to over 60 management institutes. The hot topics among students at these institutes are the size of the package, job profiles, who's got through where and the best pay masters.
According to the students and placement co-ordinators across the various management disciplines, the banking and financial services industry (BFSI) seems to emerge as a clear winner. It is recruiting students in large numbers, along with offering them better pay packages as compared to other sectors. Software companies are also offering jobs in bulk, but are mostly looking for a science or engineering background in prospective employees.
Students from the city's leading management institutes such as the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS) have got pay packages as high as Rs 10 lakh, while students from the Institute of Management Development and Research (IMDR) have got highest pay packages up to Rs 6 lakh. Also, companies from the asset management and equity research sectors have for the first time entered the campus recruitment mart.

About 12 out of a 60 students batch from various lower profile colleges have been offered packages of around Rs 5-6 lakh per annum from private banks and IT companies. But students have become choosier this time around. They are accepting offers of companies that have a very specific job profile.
"These days companies are not just looking for management trainees to replace people who are on the brink of quitting.More and more firms are offering higher designations, such as assistant manager with good pay packages to freshers. This is exciting for students who have now started looking for specific job profiles, which match their educational qualifications," said SP Kandalgaonkar, chairman, placements, IMDR.
Students seem to echo the same feeling. While most are ready to accept lower pay packages with a better profile, some are looking at other benefits and the perks along with the pay.
"Most private banks are offering fat pay packages, but their salary break-up is not easy to understand. One may drool over the gross package, but the in-hand salary is lower than expected. Also, if one ends up selling credit cards and home loans, even the fat pays are not desirable,"said a student.
"I'm ready to take up an offer from say Gujarat Glass, which is offering us around Rs 3 lakh per annum as international marketing executives, than to go for a private bank offering Rs 5 or 6 lakh per annum. Along with the brand of a Piramal group company the profile suits my educational qualifications, which is international trade," said another student from a famous management college.
