Centre approves four laning of Mumbai-Pune section of NH4
By Punekar, Section News Mumbai, May 24 (UNI) The Centre has approved four-laning and improvements of the Mumbai Pune sections of National Highway four, the work on which is expected to be completed by March, 2006. Maharashtra Public Works Department Minister Anil Deshmukh while addressing te mediapersons here, said an expenditure of about Rs 200 crore is expected for the works. The Government of India has entered into an agreement for the project with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The tender process was completed by competitive bidding and the work has been awarded to Mumbai-based Ideal Road Builders Pvt Ltd on Build Operate and Transfer basis. The toll rates will be 60 per cent of the toll being levied on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Minister said.
He said presently 10 km length of the total 111 km is already four-laned and it is proposed to convert 60 km from Shilphatha to Kalamboli, Kon to Chowk and Kusgaon to Dehu Raod junction into four lanes.
In the remaining length, six lane expressway is already available for national traffic, he added. In addition to this, road length of 58 km in the Lonavala-Khandala area towards Panvel town and Bor ghat will be strenghtened. The project will help agro-industrial growth in the nearby areas. The ten-lane highway corridor between Mumbai and Pune will increase the safety and comfort of traffic and boost socio-economic developemnet in the Mumbai-Pune area, the minister said adding that similarly, the MSRDC will also plant two lakh trees along the Mumbai Pune expressway in a period of three years.
