PUNE: Traders and merchants in Pune will participate in the one day nation-wide bandh planned on February 21 to protest against the enforcement of value added tax (VAT) from April this year.

A statement released by Rajesh Shah, senior vice president of the Federation of Associations of Maharashtra, here on Monday said that the trader community in the country was opposed to oppres-sive terms and conditions and unlimited powers given to officials in the VAT regime. The call for the nation-wide strike has been given by Shyambihari Mishra, president All India Traders Federation.
Shah stated that though the union government planned to enforce VAT from April 1, 2005 in the country, no details and explanations about its implementation have been released. "We have no information as to which commodities will be covered in VAT and the rate of taxation", he said adding that VAT can not be implemented by merely releasing a white paper. The trader community will oppose such an implementation, he said.

Shah pointed out that although traders having turnover upto Rs 5 lakh have been exempted from VAT, in reality no trader will be spared. "The government had earlier announced that other taxes will be abolished before enforcing VAT but the government has now kept mum in the matter", he remarked. He said that traders were now wondering as to how many taxes will they have to pay.

He stated that officials have been given widespread powers in the VAT regime. "They have the power to stop and check trucks and can also send people to jail if they fail to fill even one form", Shah said. He demanded that the government first form a committee of traders to discuss the implementation of VAT so that its enforcement becomes easy.
