Yet another delay. This time the autorick owners want to convert. Its the higher authorities that are creating a roadbload. Lets hope at least 4000 convert over to AutoLPG in the next 6 months. - Punekar
The Environment Protection and Conservation Authority (EPCA) led by Bhurelal has relaxed the deadline to convert autorickshaws older than 15 years on LPG from six months to one year.

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune recently received directives of the EPCA in this regard. The EPCA has laid down that of the 9,000 autorickshaws in the city which are older than 15 years, 4,000 must be converted to LPG in six months? time and the remaining 5,000 should be converted to LPG by the end of September 2006.

Earlier, at a meeting conducted on September 30, a deadline of six months was given to convert all 9,000 autorickshaws which are older than 15 years, to LPG. Autorickshaws older than 15 years will have to be pulled off the roads if they are not converted to LPG.

However, the RTO is still waiting for approval of Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for designs of the LPG gas kits to be installed in overaged autorickshaws.

??The ARAI approval for LPG kits has not yet come. If we start installing LPG kits from December, we will have to tackle almost 1,000 vehicles every month,?? said Sandesh Chavan, Assistant RTO, Prosecution.

Conversion of autorickshaws from petrol to LPG involves a lengthy and time-consuming procedure. After installation of the LPG kit, such autorickshaws are sent to the RTO on Alandi Road for its approval. After examining the roadworthiness of the vehicle, the RTO makes an entry in the Registration Card (RC) mentioning that it is run on LPG.

On the other hand, the Pune Shahar Rickshaw Federation leader Rajendra Bhave has expressed dissatisfaction over the slow progress in this regard. ??We want to participate in the process of making the city pollution free but it seems that the higher authorities are least concerned. Whenever our people go and try to register their rickshaws, they are sent back,?? alleged Bhave.
