Blacklist bad road contractors

Congress leader and MP Suresh Kalmadi on Sunday asked his party office-bearers in the Pune Municipal Corporation to blacklist the contractors who did shoddy road work for three years. ??Those contractors who are responsible for the bad conditions of roads have to be blacklisted by the PMC,?? he said at a meeting convened at the civic body. The meeting was called after veteran leader Mohan Dharia and NCP leader and guardian minister Ajit Pawar had threatened to go on strike over bad road conditions. Mayor Rajani Tribhuvan and PMC commissioner Nitin Kareer attended the meeting. Kalmadi said despite the contracts being awarded, many contractors had not started the repair work. And even in cases where the work had begun, he said around 25-40 per cent of the road was still in a bad shape. Kalmadi said these contractors should be blacklisted as merely retaining their caution deposit would not be enough. ??If need be, the contracts should be re-floated and given to new contractors,?? he said. Kareer on his part read out the statistics. He said a budgetary provision of Rs 25 crore was made for 90 roads and the work on these roads would begin soon. Besides, the 171 roads that had been damaged in the rains have been allotted Rs 45 crore for repair work.
He also said the electricity, telephone and cable companies had asked the PMC to allow laying of cable, power and phone lines on 450 km stretch in the city, while drainage would take up 50 km. Kareer said Rs 100 crore had been allotted under the Integrated Road Development Programme (IRDP) but it would not include roads on the river bed and Paud Phata-Balbharati Road.
The corporators who attended the meeting demanded that all the statistical data and details of road works should be uploaded on the PMC website.
