BSNL DataOne delayed in Pune

By Punekar, Section Computer Gupshup

Pune, January 17: BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has again given a miss to Pune. This time it is with its broadband service DataOne. Though the national rollout happened on January 14, Puneites will have to wait for a fortnight.

The reason: Equipment needed to provide last mile connectivity to the end user ? D-Slam ? is still to arrive. But even after a fortnight, BSNL will be able to provide only 1,200 connections. BSNL, Pune had an ambitious plan of rolling out the services covering the entire city and the upcoming suburbs where IT companies are located by installing broadband-enabling hardware device, or D-Slams, at 96 telephone exchanges.

BSNL principal general manager (Pune) G K Agarwal said it would not be possible to rollout the services simultaneously across 96 exchanges. ??We have received half-a-dozen D-Slams. Unless we receive equipment for at least half the exchanges, starting it would be premature,?? he said.

Another week goes by and no signs on broadband yet.  Today, I read about Ludhiana getting Dataone by March end.

BSNL to launch low-cost broadband soon

Lets hope that Pune is higher up on the BSNL list than Ludhiana.

Good info.

BSNL is definitely advertising a lot for this service.  I have seen TV ads.

The latest news in my saga is that the BSNL chaps came yesterday to do a feasibility study.  They have assured me that the connection should be operational in a week.  If that happens, it will be nothing short of a miracle.  I have very little hopes of getting anything going before April.

This is excellent news.  Which area of Pune do you belong to?  I still haven't heard from the BSNL chaps.  They came and did some loop resistance test.  But haven't shown up again.

What are you general impressions of the service?  Have you had any downtime so far?

Today's Pune Newsline has an article on BSNL expansion in the city.

Pune Newsline

The article says:

Meanwhile, despite a late start, the BSNL, Pune has gained considerable ground in broadband connections through its DataOne initiative. Nagleela said BSNL has booked and started nearly 1,000 DataOne connections in just a week's time after its launch. ``Almost 60 per cent of DataOne broadband connections have been taken by residential consumers,'' she said. ``We are now slowly approaching cyber cafe's in the city to take our broadband connections,'' said Nagleela. Soon BSNL, Pune might push DataOne amongst its corporate customers, she indicated.

If you are one of the lucky ones, please post a comment.  I am still waiting for someone to tell me if they can hook up my house or not.

Have been using dataone for the past one month. no downtime, immediate logon, excellent speed and the guys put it up in a jiffy. good guys who had come. still no difficulty faced except a few software tweaks here and there.

download speeds are also fast. i have recieved a download of around 30 kbps. they say it can be faster if the systems are good. mine is a stone age model of p2 400 with windows xp so you can imagine the speed.

abyways this is a good option and thumbs up for bsnl for its efforts.

I hope I get my connection before June 30th when the traffic limit of 1GB will get imposed.  No signs of anything happening where I stay.  Maybe they are still waiting for some equipment to arrive.

Getting a dl speed of 30 kbps would be very nice.  Right now, we have a Dishnet DSL connection and the best I get is 7 kpbs.  Almost modem speed.

Guys

Just to clear things up, when you say you are getting a download speed of 300 kbps, are you talking about the Internet explorer download box which comes up when you are downloading a file? If so, your download bandwidth speed is 300kbkps and not 30.

The internet explorer box specifies Kilobytes per second. However, bandwidth is usually a value of Kilobits per second.

1 Byte = 10 bits.

Actually, 1 Byte = 8 bits.  Generally people use Kbps for kilobits per sec and KBps for kilobytes per sec.

The latest update is the BSNL people have left the DSL modem at my place.  Hopefully, in a week or two, someone will come to connect it.

So things are indeded moving.  Someday I can also enjoy 256 Kbps (= 32 KBps).

Finally, broadband has occurred at my place.  The DSL modem is in place and its blinking at 256 kbps.

Its much faster than what I used to get from DishNet.  Lets hope BSNL removes the silly 1 GB datalimit from July.  Otherwise, I might have to go back to my 64 kbps connnection.  Yuck!

Today's Times of India has a small news blurb about BSNL Pune asking for registrations for the DataOne service.  The installation is free till March 31, 2005.

I have submitted my registration form.  I'll let you guys know if and when I get my connection.  Till then, I am stuck with DishNET DSL (now TataIndicom Broadband).
